Mrs. Shobha Subramanian
(Dance, Vocal, residing at MD, USA)
Training:
Began training in vocal and Bharatanatyam
at the age of 7. Initiated into Bharatanatyam by Guru Pandanallur Muthiah
Pillai, Bangalore and later had debut at the age of 15 under the guidance of
Ms. Sundari Seshadri (Kittappa Pillai school) of Delhi. Subsequently enhanced
style by undergoing training under the Dhananjayans, Madras. Took a short
one-on-one workshop with Prof. C.V. Chandrasekhar of Baroda.
Simultaneously, developed an interest in a
new style - the graceful enchanting Mohiniattam dance of Kerala and took
lessons from famous exponents Kalamandalam Usna Banu and Kshemavathi of Kerala.
In addition, learnt vocal Carnatic music
from mother and grandmother (disciple of Guru Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar
of Kerala)

Shivali Society, Bombay at their Young Dancers' Festival in 1989.

Maryland State Arts Council for 1994.

conducting dance festival in 1995 and workshop in 1996.

As Dance Director of Jayamangala school,
choreographed and coordinated several dance drama/group presentations like
"Sarvam Devi Mayam", "Krishna Krishna Krishna", "Andal Kalyanam" and "Ayyappa
Charitham".

In 1997, presented students at the
Salisbury Arts Council, MD and Worcester Arts Council, MD.

In collaboration with another lead dancer
of the area, presented several lecture-demonstrations in two styles at Mt.
Vernon College (DC), Swarthmore College (PA), and Haverford College (PA).

Gave a guest lecture on Mohiniattam as
part of a course entitled "Religious and Cultural dances of India" at American
University, Washington DC.
-
Participated in "Lok Nrityotsav",
"Sharavanabhava OM" and "Rhythms" in a joint effort with local dance teachers
under the banner of Indian Dance Educators' Association (IDEA).

Designed a special dance for local
Television, using an english adaptation of "Krishna
nee Begane" (from Colonial Cousins).
